Preserving Considerations
Ensure,
With many our our renovations complete, I've started interest in collecting and framing art. My first big projects will be original movie poster art.
After some reading, it's a waste to simply frame up using traditional backing methods. Here's are my notes.
Front
- Pick high-grade plexiglass with UV protection, 1/8" thick, crystal clear, non-glare,
- Lighter
- Glass has issues (moisture entrapment, likely no UV protection, poster can stick despite spacers or mat)
- Conservation Glass is better, but can break and expensive
- Do not use ammonia based cleaner
- Use especially for bigger posters as it is lighter than glass
- Use a mat to ensure the glass if lifted off the surface (only possible for smaller than 40" x 60" posters)
Backing
...
the Poster
- acid-free
- acid-neutral
- avoid foamcore unless acid free such as Artcare Archival System by Bainbridge which should only be a few dollars more
Linen Backing
...
- Expensive and fixes flatten and hide vintage folded posters.
- Make sure to go with professional who will make it reversable
- For vintage folders will bring up value if resold
- ~ cost $75 to $150
- Not advisable for double sided posters
Frames that Can Swap In and Out
...
- http://hollywoodposterframes.com/ - pre-built frames,
- http://www.spotlightdisplays.com/ - Flip frames (not sure what that means),
- www.displays2go.ca - search for snap frames (also has lightbox models) - not sure if archival though
Glass versus Plexiglass
...
- Most website I run across seem to say plexiglass... I need to do more read as they also happen to sell plexiglass frames,
- My local framer recommends glass (he has both) as he feels plexiglass yellows.
- I'm going to try a high end brand glass for now with UV protection... I need to collect the details.
Putting it Together
...
- Back the linen poster with acid free material
- Acid free foam core or 4 ply rag are best
- Hinge mount using some archival tap stuck to the linen
- Do not stretch
- Trim the linen about 1/8 smaller than the inside dimension of the frame
- If framing with wood make sure to put a barrier if framing to size
- Otherwise
Hanging
...
- Use the D-Rings on the back directly
- Adding wires to D-Rings for Large posters will put strain on the frame causing corners to pop out
