Hmm... single-user is great but for multi-user it requires chmods which can be security vulnerabilities.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/gems - sounds like a good alternative... NOT, looks abandoned.

An alternative to screens is tmux. As I rarely use screens not sure if tmux is any better but this versus article might shine some light.

Hmm.. investigating, wemux might be a good alternative... just verify the security.
